A new replacement bridge to replace a wooden bridge that spanned the Grand Union Canal between Marnham Fields (Greenford) and Smiths Farm (Northolt) has arrived from Wigan in the north west of England and was lifted into place yesterday (27 June 2023).
The lifting, using specialist equipment, to get it into place took around 40 minutes. Locals were excited to see the new bridge placed into position as it was the final part of a three year project following the previous oak bridge being closed to the pubic in early 2020 due to it being deemed unsafe.
Within minutes of the bridge being placed, the first canal boat went under it. There is some further work to be done which is set to be completed by this weekend before it is officially operational for all.
Speaking to EALING.NEWS, David Posnett from Friends of Grand Union Canal said: “It is great to see the work put in to replace the oak bridge that became unsafe just before the first lockdown. Marnham Fields is a lovely place to moor and now boaters and towpath users will now be able to easily make their way to Northala Fields via the network of blue and green ways.”
