Magnum iconic photographers and their artistic subjects come to Ealing’s Pitzhanger Manor & Gallery

For more the 70 years, the Paris-founded photo agency Magnum Photos has been home to some of the most talented photographers who have photographed some of the worlds most memorable events and people.

Founded in 1947 and having celebrated its 75th birthday in 2022, Magnum was set up as co-operative of independent photographers and to this day remains one of the most prestigious agencies for any photographer to be selected and to be part of.

Now, Ealing’s Pitzhanger Manor & Gallery is hosting an exhibition Magnum Photos: Where Ideas are Born which shows work from over 20 of Magnum’s photographers through 40 photographic portraits of some of the most well known modern artists and their work.

Within Pitzhanger Manor, visitors will see some of the most iconic artists including Andy Warhol, Anish Kapoor,  Tracey Emin, Keith Haring  Pablo Picasso, Frida Kahlo, Francis Bacon and Marc Chagall.  Their images and environments were taken by Magnum renowned photographers including Martin Parr, Inge Morath and Abbas.

Visitors will be in awe of what they see as they go through the two rooms at Pitzhanger Manor that show the portraits of the artists. While some of the artists will be instantly recognisable due to their backgrounds or iconic status, others will be less obvious.

Rather than just show the name of photographer and subject next to their portrait, Pitshanger Manor has placed A4 cards in the two rooms which visitors can use to find out who is being featured and who took the photograph. This makes the visitor immerse themselves from the photographers perspective to work out who is the artist image in front of them.

The exhibition, open until October 29 2023, draws in the visitor and takes them on a creative journey both admiring the work of the photographer and that of their creative subjects.

Magnum Photos: Where Ideas are Born is curated perfectly. It showcases how Ealing’s Pitzhanger Manor & Gallery can stage a contemporary modern exhibition with style, thought and reflection.

Admission is £9 for adults with various concessions are also available.
