99% of locals oppose Tide student housing tower planned for West Ealing

Another high rise development being planned for West Ealing by Tide Construction has come under fire from locals – with 99% of residents objecting to it in a public consultation. This follows residents concerns over a development being planned by retail giant John Lewis Partnership for its Waitrose site.

The student housing development proposal by Tide Construction would be across the road from Waitrose and has currently received 535 comments of which 530 are against it.

Tide’s proposal includes building 448 student flats on the site of a Majestic Wine store and those who object to it say it goes against Ealing Council guidance that buildings should only go up to 13 storeys – Tide’s plans are for a 21 storey tower.

Denise Colliver, co-chair of Stop the Towers told EALING.NEWS: “Ealing has a dire need for affordable homes yet Tide Construction’s proposed tower in West Ealing containing 448 student bedsits will do nothing to ease the local housing crisis. Rather than using the Majestic Wine site to construct much-needed family homes, Tide Construction wants to create temporary student housing for which there is little demand in the area.”

Ms Colliver added: “The proposed tower will transform the character of West Ealing, a historically low-rise area, and put excessive strain on local infrastructure and amenities. The West Ealing community supports proportionate development that genuinely benefits local families and enhances the neighbourhood, however Tide Construction clearly doesn’t care about this and is only interested in maximising profits regardless of the impact on those living in the shadows of its towers.”
