A six-year-old pupil from Dairy Meadow Primary School in Southall has been named as the overall winner of Ealing Council’s annual Christmas card design competition.
Sherin Shazad won both her age category of under 6 as well as being the overall winner which will see her design being on the front of Ealing Council leader Councillor Peter Mason’s Christmas card. Councillor Mason is also set to visit her at a special assembly at Dairy Meadow Primary School.
The competition was open to anyone who attends a school in the borough and is 18 or younger. There were three categories, six and under, 7-11 and 12-18 years and one overall winner.
For 2023, the competition theme was ‘Christmas in the park’ and was was judged by Council leader Peter Mason, Councillor Kamiljit Nagpal, cabinet member for a fairer start, Councillor Deirdre Costigan, deputy leader and cabinet member for climate action, and Councillor Polly Knewstub, cabinet member for thriving communities.
Councillor Mason, who will be using Sherin’s overall winning design on his Christmas cards this year said: “Once again the young people of Ealing have done us proud and shown that they are budding artists and our creatives of the future. The theme this year of ‘Christmas in the park’ was well represented and resulted in joyful scenes of celebration of our parks and green spaces.”
He added: “Congratulations and thank you to all the young people who sent in their designs – choosing the winners was very tough this year”.
Other category winners were:
Winner 7- 11, Neha Raymona Karunakaran, 9, from Stanhope Primary School in Greenford. Neha’s design will be on the Christmas card that Councillor Bassam Mahfouz, cabinet member for safe and genuinely affordable homes, sends out to all Ealing tenants this month.
Winner 12+, Chester Colaco, Year 11 from Featherstone High School in Southall.
Special Commendation, Bianca Mocanescu, 11, from Drayton Manor High School in Hanwell. Bianca’s design was chosen by Ealing Council chief executive Tony Clements which will feature on his digital card.
