A 33-year-old man who works on the Elizabeth Line as a duty customer experience manager at Ealing Broadway station has been recognised in the King’s New Year Honours with a Member of the British Empire (MBE) for suicide prevention having saved 29 people.
Rizwan Javed from East London took part in a Samaritans training course in 2015 when he joined MTR which operates the Elizabeth Line. Since then he has applied his skills to saving people and in 2019 won the Samaritans Lifesaver Award.
He told the BBC of the Samaritans training: “They basically teach you key skills of how to identify vulnerable people, what sort of conversations to have with them and how to take them to a point of safety.”
In his day to day role working for MTR on the Elizabeth Line he said on his company website: “My proudest achievement at MTREL is to have made many lifesaving interventions whilst also being able to grow within a role that I love more each and every day.”
A former chair of the Ealing Youth Orchestra has also been made a MBE for services to young people and charity. Julia Walport, 69, has also previously served as chair of The Amber Trust which helps children who are blind or partially-sighted to further their musical ambitions.
