A play that looks at racism and issues facing the local community of Southall in 1979 which saw riots is to be performed at Ealing’s Questors Theatre on 12 January 2024.
Written and directed by Tajinder Sindra and presented by Punjabi Theatre Academy, Go Back Home reveals how the South Asian Punjabi community in Southall organised themselves to take on hate and what happened during 1979.
The play follows residents of Southall including a newly arrived immigrant Joga Singh as tensions grow between the far right National Front (NF) and locals from the South Asian Punjabi community.
The production explores what happened when the NF tried to hold an anti-immigrant meeting in the run up to the 1979 General Election. In Southall, local MP Sidney Bidwell and community leader Mr Sharma attempt to stop it while young local people organise protests.
The play also remembers school teacher Blair Peach. Mr Peach was killed in April 1979 by a police officer from its Special Patrol Group at an anti-racism demonstration that took place in Southall.
Mr Sindra said: “The fight against racism persists both within and outside our society. We must stand together to combat it.”
Tickets for the production can be booked online on The Questors website. or via the box office on 020 8567 5184.
