It was recently announced that former Ealing North MP Harry Greenway passed away on January 18 2024. His funeral will take place at midday on 8 March 2024 at St Stephen’s Church, Rochester Row, Westminster.
Ealing Conservatives Councillor Anthony Young shares his memory of Mr Greenway.
“Harry was Conservative MP for Ealing North from 1979 to 1997, winning four consecutive elections.
“In 1979, Harry defeated the incumbent, Labour’s Bill Malloy, who had held the seat for 15 years, by a narrow majority of 1,480. Harry increased his majority to 15,15%, taking more than 50% of the vote in 1987. Harry was a very active MP. It seemed, when canvassing, that nearly everybody had met Harry on the doorstep.
“Harry was an assiduous constituency MP, attending events and supporting the community at every possible opportunity. Harry was good at courting publicity – I remember him jumping into a swimming pool fully-clothed for a photo opportunity.
“Harry had been a secondary school deputy headmaster before entering Parliament; education remained a continuing interest. Harry was a Director of the British Horse Society and President of the British Riding Schools Association. He also served on the Council of the Open University. Harry established the Greenford Carnival and for many years arranged the annual Greenford concerts for pensioners and disabled people.
“After leaving Parliament, Harry remained associated with various charities in Ealing North, and remained Honorary President of Ealing North Conservative Association. He was appointed a Freeman of the London Borough of Ealing in 2008.”
