Ealing campaigners call for more support for the NHS

NHS campaigners on Saturday (9 March 2024) have raised awareness in Ealing to residents of Restore Our NHS action day.

A number of stalls, including one outside Ealing Town Hall, popped up across Ealing Broadway to raise awareness by Ealing Save Our NHS which supports Keep Our NHS Public.

Oliver New, chair of Ealing Save Our NHS said: “Our NHS is a vital part of our lives; we all need it, starting from birth. It’s imperative that the NHS is funded to work properly, not underfunded to fail. In Ealing and elsewhere, pretty much all sections of the NHS, from A&Es to maternity to dentistry to GPs, are under-resourced in recent years and staff put under an unacceptable level of pressure”

Mr New added: “We have seen an constant flow of re-organisation and restructuring of the NHS, all aimed at reducing costs, but it usually making things worse for the NHS staff and easier for private companies to draw on scarce NHS resources. People are increasing forced to pay for operations, for mental health support and for private dentistry, all of which takes away NHS trained staff and leaves behind those who can’t afford to pay.”

Campaigners also raised awareness to local residents about recent plans by NHS North West London to implement a controversial decision that was set to see same day GP appointments be moved from surgeries and on to telephone hubs, mainly staffed by non-doctors.

This decision by NHS North West London has now been postponed following objections from campaigners, patient groups and GPs themselves.

Saturday’s protests in Ealing called on political leaders of all parties to commit to restoring more funding for the NHS and seeking an end to privatisation.

Mr New added: “Most shoppers certainly understand that their NHS needs proper funding and not privatisation.”
