The School of Medicine and Biosciences comes to Ealing

Ealing’s University of West London (UWL) is the home of a new health research facility, The School of Medicine and Biosciences which opened on Wednesday (17 April 2024).

According to UWL, the School’s aim is to “improve the health of local communities and reduce inequalities” and has formed partnerships 12 organisations including the West London NHS Trust,  Central and North West London NHS Foundation Trust and the London Ambulance Service NHS Trust.

The areas of research which it will focus on include ageing and dementia, healthcare inequalities, exploring malnutrition treatment and infection control, VR-assisted medical training, artificial Intelligence scan processing and gene-targeted cancer therapy.

The 12 partnerships it has launched with are:

• Ashford & St Peter’s Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (ASPHFT)
• Berkshire Healthcare (BHFT)
• Central and North West London NHS Foundation Trust (CNWL)
• Central London Community Healthcare NHS Trust (CLCH)
• Chelsea & Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (CWHFT)
• Croydon University Hospital
• Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust (FHFT)
• Hounslow & Richmond Community Healthcare NHS Trust (H&R)
• London Ambulance Service NHS Trust
• London North West University Healthcare NHS Trust (LNWH)
• Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust (RBFT)
• West London NHS Trust (WLMHT)

The new school will be headed by Professor Anthony Woodman, provost and senior deputy vice-chancellor of UWL. He said: “Our vision for The School of Medicine and Biosciences is to deliver more research-led undergraduate and postgraduate courses, building on UWL’s track record of translating rigorous research into practice and policy, developing the next generation of scientists from undergraduates through to world-leading researchers.”

Within the school, The Geller Institute of Ageing and Memory (GIAM), headed by Professor Katie Featherstone will also play a key role and will expand on the work it does on aging.

Professor Peter John CBE, vice-chancellor of UWL said: “The opening of the School of Medicine and Biosciences today is a very proud moment for the University of West London as it marks the achievement of a major strategic goal. With the School’s mission to improve the health of local communities and reduce inequalities by developing and delivering hyperlocal health and social care initiatives, it espouses what we do best at UWL – bringing meaningful, transformational change to people’s lives.”
