Generous Ealing residents have been donating their unwanted tablets and phones to support an initiative that will refurbish tech and give them out to help people in Ealing who are digitally excluded.
The Digital Poverty Alliance (DPA), PayByPhone and Computer Recyclers UK have joined forces with Ealing Council to launch the scheme which runs until the end of August 2024 and aims to give Ealing residents of all ages tech to help them.
Since launching in February 2024 with the aim to collect 200 devices, more than 100 devices have been donated so far with Ealing Library the most popular donation location to date. Any donated device will be wiped of all data and any devices which are not suitable for refurbishing will be used to repair other tablets and phones.
The refurbished devices will be given out to Ealing residents starting from October 2024.
Adam Dolphin, UK managing director for PayByPhone said: “With 19 per cent of Ealing residents not having a computer at home, to donate your unused laptops, tablets and phones makes a real difference to children and young people in Ealing. We’re proud this campaign is working to go some way to address this in a community in which we have such a strong connection.” one.
