Ealing Council issue over 200,000 penalty tickets to drivers across Ealing since 2022

A freedom of information (FOI) request has revealed that Ealing Council has issued 203,495 penalty charge notices to drivers in the borough raising £9.5m in fines since 2022.

The council says the increase is due to “increased enforcement due to lack of compliance across the borough, more control parking zones (CPZs) being introduced, and better use of technology to monitor restrictions.”

During 2022, 34,661 penalty charge notices were issued which then increased to 89,618 penalty charge notices in 2023 and 2024 looks set to be a record year with 79,216 notices issued so far.

The FOI request by online car retailer cinch, revealed that the fines brought in £1,754,590 for Ealing Council in 2022, £4,383,576 in 2023 and £3,379,725 so far in 2024.

The Broadway in Southall saw 3,249 fines in 2023 while in 2022, Coronation Road in Park Royal was top of the parking fine spots with 1,514 fines issued. So far in 2024, The Broadway in Southall has emerged top again with 4,661 fines issued.

Sam Sheehan, motoring editor at cinch, said: “These figures should be a reminder for all drivers to carefully check any nearby signs before parking – especially in busy areas or places they aren’t familiar with.”

Mr Sheehan added: “Nobody wants to find a parking fine come through their letterbox. Also, if you think the fine is unfair or it’s incorrect, don’t forget you have 28 days to appeal to an independent tribunal. And, if it is correct, you might be able to reduce the fine by paying sooner rather than later. ”

Speaking to EALING.NEWS, an Ealing Council spokesperson said: “The increase in penalty charge notices being issued is a combination of several factors which include increased enforcement due to lack of compliance across the borough, more control parking zones (CPZs) being introduced, and better use of technology to monitor restrictions.”

The spokesperson added: “We can monitor CPZs efficiently by using ANPR drivers, and can check the validity of disabled badges, using enforcement against those that are not valid.”
