Hanwell Town survived a second half fightback on Wednesday (9 October 2024) from Glebe to progress into the next round of the London Senior Cup.
The Geordies had raced into a 3-0 lead midway through the first half thanks to an Ezekiel Coker brace and a fine strike from Nathaniel Boayke. However, James Philpott struck twice in the second half to set up a nervy final 15 minutes which was only settled when Kameron English fired home five minutes from time.
Chris Moore shuffled the pack after the FA Trophy win against Berkhamsted with Sam Beasant and Rudi Pache the two survivors from that contest but it took just four minutes from the Geordies to hit the front.
Coker’s pace was causing problems and he won a free kick close to the corner flag. Ryan Case’s delivery caused chaos in the six yard box and Coker was there to stab the ball home from close range.
The quality of Hanwell’s set pieces caused consistent problems for the home defence and, following a foul that ended Case’s involvement in the game midway through the first half, they doubled their lead from another free kick that Glebe couldn’t deal with allowing Boayke to fire home from 20 yards.
Two minutes later, the Geordies were 3-0 up as Coker was felled in the penalty area. The frontman dusted himself down and sent the keeper the wrong way to seemingly put the tie beyond doubt.
Elliot Benyon nearly made it four before half time when his header was well saved after a delightful cross from Chris Regis but the Geordies had to settle for a three goal cushion at the break.
Glebe, with nothing to lose, started to commit bodies forward and pulled a goal back as Philpott turned home from six yards after a corner was not dealt with by the Geordies’ defence.
He had his second with 15 minutes to go from the penalty spot; Beasant, Saturday’s penalty shoot out hero, nearly pulled off another save but the penalty was just too powerful.
Glebe pushed forward looking for the equaliser that would force extra time but, on the counter, Hanwell settled matter as Alfie Pendlebury won his duel down the left flank, fed fellow substitute Jordan English. This season’s top scorer unselfishly passed to English who fired home to restore a two-goal cushion and erase any doubt as to which side would be progressing to the next round.
