Hanwell church raises funds by recycling the “unrecyclable”

A volunteer for St. Thomas’ Church in Hanwell has raised £5,600 to help fund much needed church repairs by recycling items that are currently “unrecyulable”.

Pauline Britton singed up to TerraCycle’s recycling programme which offers points that can be turned into cash for items including air freshener cartridges, plastic bread bags and home and laundry care packaging.  Due to the nature of these items they are not included in council kerbside recycling collections and end up for landfill or incineration.

St. Thomas’s Church has a special drop-off point for these items in Elthorne Park where locals can drop off their items to be recycled and help support the repairs of the church.

Ms Britton said: “To date, we’ve raised £5,600 for St. Thomas’ Church by sending waste to TerraCycle, saving 6,000kg of waste from landfill in the process, which is a fantastic achievement. These donations have funded the redecoration and repair of the Church, a vital space for both the church group and the wider community.”
