Record 24 parks and open spaces across Ealing get Green Flag Award from Keep Britain Tidy

Keep Britain Tidy has recognised Ealing by giving a record number of awards to the borough with 24 Green Flag Awards for parks and open spaces. From Acton’s Acton Park through to Northolt’s Northala Fields and from Southall’s Southall Park through to Katherine Buchan Meadow in Hanwell, a wide variety of Ealing’s parks and open spaces made the grade.

At a Green Flag Award raising awareness event in Perivale Park, Councillor Deirdre Costigan, cabinet member for climate action said: “You only get a Green Flag if your parks are well managed and have great facilities and that’s what we’ve got – not just here in Perivale Park, but across the length and breadth of the borough. Everyone will have noticed that we are going through a period of really dry weather and you can see that affected our parks – it is a really good reminder of why fighting the climate crisis is so important to us. We want local people to come and enjoy our parks this summer, but please make sure you help us keep them safe and clean.”

Councillor Peter Mason, leader of the council said: “24 Green Flags flying over our parks and beautiful green spaces is a new record. Our parks are at the heart of communities throughout the borough. They provide so many benefits, not just for people, but for wildlife and biodiversity too. They are also there for residents of all ages and backgrounds to use to stay active and healthy or just to enjoy and relax in.

Keep Britain Tidy’s Chief Executive, Allison Ogden-Newton OBE said: “Parks are an essential part of our green infrastructure, playing a key role in our environmental sustainability. They are often the beating heart of a community, providing countless benefits to people and wildlife. Importantly, they provide a green haven for everybody to enjoy, regardless of their age, social status or ability to pay for access. It’s clear from our research that for quality green spaces to meaningfully contribute to our health and wellbeing, they must be universally accessible and fit for purpose.”

Ms Ogden-Newton added: “The Green Flag Award is a vital component in ensuring the continuing quality of our parks and green spaces, making sure they are managed to the highest standards and are safe and accessible. The news that a record number have achieved the Green Flag Award standard is testament to the hard work of staff and volunteers who look after these national assets.”
