As Liz Truss is appointed today (6 September 2022) by The Queen as the UK’s new Prime Minister, politicians across Ealing have spoken on what they want to see the former Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs and Minister for Women and Equalities.
The major issue in Ealing, like that across the UK is the cost of gas and electricity and what Ms Truss will do and when.
Dr Rupa Huq, MP for Ealing Central and Acton, said: “At a time when families across Ealing, Acton and Chiswick are facing real worry over rising bills, our next Prime Minister has had more to say about cutting tax for huge corporations and culture war issues than what she’s going to do about the cost-of-living crisis affecting every household.”
Dr Huq added: “During the seemingly endless leadership campaign, Liz Truss failed to set out a plan on the single-biggest issue facing the public, creating a huge amount of uncertainty for businesses and families alike. I’m not convinced she grasps the scale of the crisis ahead of us or has the mettle to deal with it ‒ she’s continuity Boris, offering more of the same tired ideas that got us into this mess in the first place. Liz Truss needs to stop delaying and ensure no one pays a penny more on their energy bill this winter, paid for by a windfall tax on oil and gas companies. I will be holding her Government to account every step of the way.”
In a tweet, Virendra Sharma, MP for Ealing, Southall gave his thoughts: “We need action on the cost-of-living crisis, action like the Labour plan to freeze bills this winter, but this government offers nothing but apathy and delay. This Tory Government is lurching from crisis to crisis, unable to offer action or anything new. The country is crying out for a general election, this government has no new answers, and the new Prime Minister is proud that inequality is fair.”
Ealing Council Councillor Gary Malcolm, Liberal Democrat leader of the Opposition, said: “Liberal Democrats do not hold out any hope on fuel bills with Liz Truss as she has had presented few new ideas to help many of those residents and businesses in Ealing who are suffering due to the high rise in fuel bills and inflation. Liberal Democrats would cancel the price cap rise with the Government subsidising the difference. There are parents in Ealing who have said they will skip meals or not eat hot meals so they can afford heating and other vital services for their children. This is not how life should be for a parent.”
Ealing Green Party chair Neil Reynolds told EALING.NEWS: “After a summer where Ealing residents sweltered in record temperatures as a result of the climate emergency, worried about the soaring cost of energy, and saw their living standards fall with high inflation, the appointment of Liz Truss will at least see an end to the inaction of government. My fear is that she will make all of the wrong choices. We need more more solar farms and onshore wind turbines to tackle the energy and climate crisis. She should also nationalise the energy companies, as only the green party proposes, to ensure the profiteering ends, helping people and businesses in desperate need of financial help now.”
Julian Gallant, Conservative Councillor for Ealing Broadway and Conservative group leader gave his personal statement to EALING.NEWS: “I warmly congratulate Liz Truss on being elected as Conservative Party Leader and on her appointment as Prime Minister today. Our times are difficult and uncertain. We are faced with a cost-of-living crisis and a truly awful conflict in Ukraine, where thousands have died on both sides because of one man’s wicked, aggressive and utterly misplaced nationalism. Liz Truss steps in to confront all this and I know she will – with determination, energy and craft! She and the government can count on the support of all Conservatives, regardless of who they voted for.”
Ealing Conservative Councillors issued their statement on Liz Truss becoming Conservative Party leader and Prime Minister: “Ealing’s Conservative Councillors warmly congratulate Liz Truss on her election as Conservative Party leader and appointment as Prime Minister. We are confident that Liz Truss has the knowledge and experience of government to tackle the pressing issues of our times, nationally and internationally. We offer her and the government our full support.”
In a tweet, Dr Onkar Sahota, Chair London Assembly and member for Ealing & Hillingdon said: “Congratulations to @trussliz on her election to be the next PM. Her in-tray is very full with the energy crisis, cost of living crisis and the NHS crisis. She will know about these as her party caused them over the last 12 years!”
