Community groups discuss with LibDems what action to take against Ealing Council’s controversial local plan

A recent meeting organised by Ealing Liberal Democrats has seen over 20 local community groups come together to discuss Labour-run Ealing Council’s controversial plans which include removing green belt status and Metropolitan Open Land (MOL) status from many sites and land across Ealing.

The meeting follows a February 2023 letter The Mayor of London Sadiq Khan sent to Ealing Council in which he raised concerns over many parts of Ealing Council’s proposed 15 year local plan. The Mayor has called parts of it “inappropriate” as well as highlighting concern over the council’s “proposed approach towards its Green Belt and Metropolitan Open Land.”

The Liberal Democrats said the aim is to “bring together lots of local groups who are all against aspects of the Council’s Local Plan.”

The meeting from chaired by Ealing Liberal Democrat leader Gary Malcolm and Hanger Hill Councillor Athena Zissimos spoke about what they can do to help the residents’ groups.

Councillor Malcolm said: “Liberal Democrats are trying to bring people together, many of whom felt they have not been listened to by the Labour-run Ealing Council. It is chilling that Labour are considering building on green belt and Metropolitan Open Land.”

Among the groups who attended the meeting were: Cap the Towers, Central Acton Neighbourhood Forum (CANForum), Central Ealing Neighbourhood Forum, Central Ealing Residents’ Association, Creffield and Ealing Common Conservation Group, Creffield Area Residents’ Association (CARA), Ealing Fields Residents Association, Ealing Fields Residents’ Association, Ealing Friends of the Earth, Ealing Hockey, Ealing Matters, Friary Green Residents’ Association, Friends of Friars Gardens (FOFGA), Friends of Grove Farm, Friends of the Earth, Mill Hill Residents Group, Rothschild Orchard Neighbourhood Forum (RONF), Save Ealing’s Centre and Save Gurnell.
