Learn to reuse and repair event comes to Acton

Action West London is co-hosting a free afternoon event on Wednesday (17 May 2023) at its HQ – The Donut Factory in Acton – with Ealing Repair Cafe to show and help people to repair and recycle their clothing and other items.

Between 12.30pm and 4.30pm, anyone who pre-books can come along and learn how to fix clothes from the basics of sawing through to patching and more advanced techniques to make use of clothing that can be repaired.

During the afternoon at The Doughnut Factory, 10 Warple Mews, Warple Way, Acton, London W3 0RF, items can also be brought in that can be recycled including small electrical appliances, laptops and writing instruments. These items will go to Traid, The Fixing Factory and Terracycle.

EALING.NEWS spoke to Zahra Shah. social media officer for Market W3 from Action West London to find out more.

Is this the first event at your offices and before this, where else has it happened where people can learn to mend clothes and fix things?
This is the first community event to be held at Donut Factory where we are inviting the community to come to our offices for a community event. Other spaces where people can learn to mend and fix clothes are the monthly Reduce and Recycle Hub at Acton market and via event held by Ealing Repair Cafe

How much interest has there been in recent years with recycling and mending?
The cost of living crisis has really pushed people into reusing, recycling and mending. Our monthly market event talk to a lot of locals who are interested in fixing and mending clothes instead of disposing of them.

What help will people be offered if they’ve never ever mended their own clothes?
The volunteers from Ealing Repair cafe , will be on site to share their knowledge and skills in recycling clothing. They will show attendees everything from a basic stitch to more creative stitching like Japanese sashiko stitching. Anyone mending to the first time will have some on hand to help them.
