Ealing bid team presents its offer to be selected as London Borough of Culture 2025

A team from Ealing Council led by Councillor Polly Knewstub, cabinet member for thriving communities have met with the Mayor of London’s assessment panel to present its offer to become London Borough of Culture 2025

Ealing is one nine boroughs in the capital bidding for the Mayor’s London Borough of Culture award for 2025 as well as 2027. It is going up against Barnet, Greenwich, Hammersmith & Fulham, Haringey, Havering, Merton, Newham, Wandsworth for the prestigious award which celebrates creativity and character of London boroughs.

The two winning boroughs will each be awarded £1.35 million to deliver their programme of events which is about “placing culture at the heart of their communities and celebrating the unique character of local people and places.”

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan has said of London Borough of Culture which launched in 2017: “Culture has the power to transform communities and to bring people closer together. Now, more than ever, there is a pressing need to reach out to our neighbours and celebrate London’s unique and diverse culture. London Borough of Culture is a great way to do just that whilst showing the world that our cultural gems extend way beyond the centre of the capital to all corners of the city.”

From rock to bhangra and from filmmaking to art, Ealing has a rich history of culture throughout its seven towns which the council has showcased to the Mayor in its bid.

Speaking to EALING.NEWS, Councillor Knewstub said: “Last year we launched a cultural manifesto for Ealing. We spoke with hundreds of arts organisations and creatives and residents. We know we need to turbo-charge culture and cultural infrastructure in Ealing, and we want to kickstart a million conversations and to forge connections between everyone that calls Ealing their home. As well as commissioning a world class line up of events throughout the year we will create culture hubs in all of our seven towns.”

Councillor Knewstub added: “The hubs will create a local and accessible network, exchanging content and ideas to amplify each town’s identity and encouraging residents to explore other areas they rarely visit in this large borough. Our cultural manifesto pledged to give all of 367,100 of us the opportunity  to be creative. Becoming Borough of Culture will help us make good on that pledge.”
