Ealing Hospital on the small screen and big screen

Ever since it opened in 1979, Ealing Hospital has been used for the small screen and big screen.  More recently it was seen in This is Going to Hurt based on the best-selling diary of former doctor Adam Kay starring Ben Whishaw and which Adam returned to the hospital to help plant a tree as a fitting tribute to NHS staff nationwide who have taken their lives.

Here’s a guide to some of its most famous moments.

Comedy  medical dramas Green Wing and Porters.

John Thaw served up his own brand of justice in police drama The Sweeney long before playing the more genteel Inspector Morse.

Super-agent Jack Bauer upped the ante in 24 when terrorists blew the hospital up with the aid of SFX, while Idris Elba played the ‘obsessive, possessive and somewhat violent’ Luther.

Idris even popped into the hospital café during a break in filming much to the surprise of customers who got the chance to rub shoulders with the Marvel superhero.

One of the longest running shows was crime drama Silent Witness which often used the mortuary as its backdrop, McMafia kept up the body count when an English financier falls foul of the Russian mob, while gangland drama Top Boy made a scene in A&E

Humans provided anything but in the sci-fi drama of the same name about the dangers of artificial intelligence, while a group of pensioners recognised the dangers of staying in the UK and settle for a new life in India in The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel.

A moving scene in the show This Is Going to Hurt saw a tree planted outside the hospital in a doctor’s memory and sparked numerous real-life visits from people trying to find the location and which now has a tree planted.
