New art displays open at Pitzhanger Manor & Gallery

Ealing’s Pitzhanger Manor & Gallery located by Walpole Park has launched a new series of displays called Artists at Home as well as showing prints of a Roman villa.

Located inside Sir John Soane’s Manor, the work of New York-based artist Erin O’Keffe is the first to be shown at Artists at Home.

According to Pitzhanger Manor, the “programme will explore the interplay between inspiring contemporary art and the exquisite details of the grade-I listed historic building, echoing Soane’s own passion for interweaving his living spaces with his beloved art collection.”

Speaking to EALING.NEWS, Clare Gough, director of Pitzhanger Manor & Gallery said: “We’re really excited to have Erin O’Keffe’s work hanging here. Soane who designed Pitzhanger always combined contemporary art with historic works. So we wanted to follow in the footsteps and do the same thing. We were looking for a good contemporary artist to work with, and fell in love with Erin’s work.

Ms Gough explained: “Erin is both an architect and a photographer, and you can really see that in her work. The way she brings in 3D images, but manages to make them 2D. She uses incredible bold colours very much like Soane. So we felt that they worked incredibly well in the spaces and we’re excited to have it here.”

Ms Gough said it will be on display until 1 October 2023.  Along with O’Keefe’s art there will also be other works on display in the Manor.

Ms Gough revealed: “Over the summer there’s a chance to see some other other pieces of more historic displays of a model that Soane created of the building that ultimately became Pitshanger and some other beautiful old 18th century prints at the same time – Villa Negroni.”

She added: “This is a Roman villa that was excavated in the late 1770s. And it caused a complete stir when it was discovered because people didn’t realise that the Romans fresco their houses in that way. So it actually caused a major change in how interior decorators at the time decorated houses. So it’s fun to see those in situ, which inspired Soane in Soane’s own home.”

Admission is £9 for adults with various concessions are also available.
