An Acton portrait photographer has scooped the Self-Portrait People’s Choice Award at the prestigious British Photography Awards for her own self-portrait depicting her breast cancer diagnosis and before surgery.
Chohee Courtois, 33, won the 2023 People’s Choice Self-Portrait Photography Award for her work, Mountain Before the Cut which was a self-portrait taken prior to her lumpectomy.
Mrs Courtois said: “Earlier this year, I faced the challenge of a breast cancer diagnosis along with other personal issues. This image was primarily to document my breast before surgery but also to symbolise the strength needed to overcome such a stressful period. It stands as a beacon of hope.”
The photographer who has a studio in West Acton said she thanks those who voted for her. “I’m eternally grateful to all who appreciate my work.”
Mrs Courtois added that a limited number of prints of the award winning self-portrait will be made available for sale with proceeds going to a breast cancer charity.
