Park Royal building to become energy centre and hub for circular economy

Old Oak and Park Royal (OPDC), the Mayor of London’s development corporation has bought a building in Park Royal which will be used to power its district heat network as well as becoming a hub for circular economy.

Located on 1-2 Minerva Road, the building will be turned into an energy centre to reclaim waste heat from local datacentres.  It will also be used to provide low-cost energy to heat local businesses, Central Middlesex Hospital and 10,000 new homes in Old Oak.

It’s expected that the former warehouse will be ready as an energy centre in 2026 but before that, it will be turned into a circular economy hub for the community. ODPC will lease the building to the Republic of Park Royal to provide workspace for local businesses and suppliers.

David Lunts, CEO of OPDC said: “As London’s largest industrial estate, Park Royal provides exceptional opportunities to kickstart a new circular economy. To do this we are temporarily using the site of our heat network’s energy centre to give the space and freedom for grassroots organisations to create amazing products that will be re-used, sustainably and affordably.

“We can’t wait to see these plans evolve and we’re proud to be investing in local businesses who are working hard to reduce waste in London.”

Jonny Brewin, CEO and founder of the Republic of Park Royal said: “So much of what our community of artists and makers does is bound to the principles of re-use and sustainability. It’s great to now expand this vision and work on building an official home for it.”
