Man from Northolt found guilty of sexual assault in Newbury

A 53-year-old man from Northolt who sexually assaulted a woman following a night out in Berkshire has been jailed for three years and nine months.

Marcus Sawkins from Dabbs Hill in Northolt and the woman had gone to a hotel in Newbury, having been out drinking on the evening of 30 June 2018.

A court heard the woman had fallen to sleep at the hotel, and woke to find Sawkins inappropriately touching her.

Sawkins denied one count of sexually assaulting the woman but was convicted at Reading Crown Court following a four day trial between 11 July and 14 July 2022 and on 6 September 2022 was sent to jail for 45 months.

Investigating officer DC James Postans said: “Marcus Sawkins took advantage of a vulnerable woman, who was not in a position to consent to any activity. He has shown no remorse and has sought to place the blame on the woman throughout this investigation and criminal proceedings.”

DC Postans added: “I want to commend her for her bravery in coming forward and reporting what was understandably an extremely upsetting assault. Hopefully this jail sentence will provide her some comfort as she seeks to move on with her life. Our team worked tirelessly to get this case to court and obtain justice for her. We take all reports of sexual offences extremely seriously and will relentlessly pursue perpetrators.”
