The current Deputy Mayor of Ealing, Labour party Councillor Mohinder Midha has been elected to become the new Mayor of Ealing for 2022-23 following a full council meeting last night.
“We are so proud that Cllr Mohinder Midha has been elected Mayor of Ealing for the next year,” the Ealing Labour Party said in a statement.
Councillor Midha, takes over as Ealing Mayor from Councillor Munir Ahmed and represents the Dormer’s Wells ward.
“It has been the greatest honour and privilege to serve the Borough I love as a first citizen,” said outgoing Mayor Councillor Ahmed. “I will continue to serve the people of Perivale and Ealing as a elected member and in different roles in the council and the Labour party, the party that gave me so much.”
Councillor Midha is also the first Dalit woman mayor in the UK. In India, the Dalit are known as untouchable, the lowest caste in the country.
“The first ever Dalit woman mayor in the UK. A proud moment for us,” said Santosh Dass, chair of the Federation of Ambedkarite and Buddhist Organisation (FABO) UK, a group representing Dalit rights.
Supporting Councillor Midha as Deputy Mayor will be East Acton ward councillor Hitesh Tailor.
