Ealing Mayor for 2021-22, Councillor Munir Ahmed raises nearly £17,000 for local charity Home-Start Ealing

The Mayor of Ealing for 2021-22, Councillor Munir Ahmed has presented Home-Start Ealing, his chosen charity with a cheque for £16,700.31 from the fund raising his term of being Ealing’s mayor has raised.

At the cheque presenting ceremony at Ealing Town Hall today (2 August 2022), Councillor Ahmed along with newly elected Mayor Councillor Mohinder Midha, representatives from Home-Start Ealing attended. They were delighted and overwhelmed by how much has been raised both in fundraising but also in giving greater awareness to the work they do in Ealing in helping parents raise their children

Sue Porter, project manager for Home-Start Ealing told EALING.NEWS: “The money means so much to us. We don’t get any government or council funding. This will help so much to cover our work and be used to support our groups and activities. The money will be used to cover staffing. It will be used to buy equipment and supplies for families and to go towards our special events such as our Christmas party.”

Ms Porter added: “This helps so much. We’re having a day at the farm this year, and just making lives as good as we can for the families that we support. It will also go towards  training volunteers because our volunteers go and visit our families each week and they are the lifeblood of Home Start.”

Former Mayor Councillor Ahmed explained to EALING.NEWS about the importance of Home-Start Ealing and how it was chosen by him: “Once we elect a mayor here in Ealing, we give him or her an extra role, which is to raise funds for the charity. The mayor doesn’t have his or her own charity. But the mayor chooses a charity and my charity during 2021-2022 was Home-Start Ealing.”

He added: “The reason for me was that we had just come out of the pandemic and Home-Start Ealing is helping those who are vulnerable, those who are victims of domestic violence, single parents, single families, and I thought this was the best charity that I could choose.”

As well as two mayors being present, local councillor for Greenford Broadway Anthony Kelly who has also helped Home-Start Ealing attended along with Councillor Karam Mohan from Lady Margaret Ward in Southall.

Former Ealing North MP, Stephen Pound, who was also Mayor of Ealing 1995-6, was at the presentation to meet Home-Start Ealing representatives.

Councillor Ahmed added: “I’m glad that today we had this mini presentation with my colleague councillors along with former Member of Parliament and Mayor, Stephen Pound and to present the cheque to Home-Start Ealing. I’m sure they will be able to make good use of it.”
