Ealing’s The University of West London (UWL) and Business College of Athens (BCA) have joined forces to form the Hellenic Institute of Maritime Studies (HIMS) based in London which is set to launch in summer 2024.
HIMS will offer executive training, postgraduate education and maritime research.
Representatives from both UWL and BCA met in London for the signing of the arrangement.
Those attending from UWL were president and vice-chancellor Professor Peter John CBE, provost and senior deputy vice-chancellor Professor Anthony Woodman and pro vice-chancellor (Business Development) Dr Suresh Gamlath.
The representatives from BCA were president Basil Daskalakis, CEO Harris Daskalakis, Dean (Academic Director and Director of Administration) Dr Spyros Kostakis and director of shipping studies Apostolos Poulovassilis.
UWL vice-chancellor Peter John said: “We have had partnership in the past, but this has taken it to another level. Maritime studies in its wider sense will now be offered in London and elsewhere and we hope to enlarge the whole offering to include Cyber Security, Marine Engineering Management and Marine Finance, so it is much wider than shipping. This partnership will not only be based in London but will have a global reach as well.”
CEO of BCA Harris Daskalakis commented: “BCA is proud to partner with the University of West London in establishing the Hellenic Institute of Maritime Studies, the first ever academic partnership between a British and a Greek academic institution in the UK. HIMS will provide cutting-edge Masters degrees as well as executive education in the fields of Ship Management, Marine Engineering Management and Maritime Cyber Security, as well as conduct research in issues currently affecting the global shipping industry, such as sustainability, alternative fuels and autonomous vessels.”
