West London College students display their rainbow laces to show support to LGBTQ+ in sport

Students at West London College studying Public Services have celebrated LGBTQ+ Rainbow Laces season on Monday (31 October 2022).

Rainbow Laces was started by LGBTQ+ campaigning group Stonewall in 2013 and since then more than a million people have laced up to show support of LGBTQ+ inclusion in sport.

During a theory session this morning at West London College, students discussed British Values including tolerance and recognising and understanding the issues LGBTQ+ people face. In the followup practical lesson, the students took time out to demonstrate support for Stonewall’s Team Pride campaign by showing off their rainbow laces.

Omari Rhoden (17) Public Services Level 3 said: “It’s really important to show equality, diversity and representation, as well as, acceptance. We need to go beyond tolerance.”

Hala Kanaan (16) Public Services Level 3 said: “There is too much hate in this world and that’s why we need to make it clear whenever we can that we love and accept everyone.”

West London College Public Services teacher Darren Morgan said: “Campaigns like Rainbow Laces Season give us a focal point to discuss British Values such as Tolerance of Different Religions and Beliefs in our tutorials and practicals. It also gives the students the opportunity to talk about personal experiences and friends and family who are dealing with LGBTQ+ issues.”
