Ealing Hospital goes paperless with patient records

London North West University Healthcare NHS Trust (LNWH), has completed a two-year project that has seen it digitise 210,000 patient records including those from Ealing Hospital.

Its MediViewer system allows clinical staff access to patient information on screen and replaces a historic paper system which is more than 50 years old.

Simon Crawford, deputy chief executive said: “It’s been a long and momentous journey.”

LWNH revealed it scanned 54 million pages of notes and is hosting 108 million medical images.

According to LNWH, MediViewer is more efficient and will help improve patient care.  According to the Trust, it will also save more than £10 million in storage space and associated costs during the next five years.

Mary Cahill, associate director digital service delivery, added: “It was a huge team effort and everyone involved should be proud of themselves. The icing on the cake is my team successfully applied for higher banded roles elsewhere in the Trust and within Medical Records.”
