Ealing residents welcome at new monthly memory cafe for anyone affected by dementia

A new free monthly memory cafe, run by homecare provider Visiting Angels West London, which will provide a welcoming support environment for anyone affected by dementia is starting next Tuesday (16 May 2023).

The monthly cafe, which launches during Dementia Action Week, takes place at Clayponds Community Centre, 168 Clayponds Gardens, W5 4RQ and though located in Hounslow’s part of W5, is open to all Ealing residents.

The creation of a memory cafe, in this part of Hounslow Council which borders with Ealing Council, is the result of work done by Brentford East Councillor Marina Sharma who started an area forum project to get a memory cafe started in her ward.  Councillor Sharma has a background in social care and was previously a care manager prior to being elected last year as a Hounslow councillor.

Following election in May 2022, she was made chair of the Health & Adults Scrutiny panel for Labour-run Hounslow Council.

Speaking to EALING.NEWS, Councillor Sharma explained what the panel did and their findings. “My panel this municipal year completed a deep-dive in dementia services and support in the borough. Through my previous line of work and the panel findings I knew that more provisions were needed for the borough for those with dementia and their carers.”

Councillor Sharma added: “I approached Visiting Angels West London and gave my idea for a memory cafe and they agreed to supply this much needed provision. It will be held on a monthly basis at Clayponds Community Centre and although it has a W5 postcode it is with the in Hounslow Borough but it is open for all residents in both boroughs.”
