North Acton’s The Castle to rise as two 32 and 27 storey high co-living homes

Paying homage to the former pub, The Castle in North Acton, property developer Tide Construction has been given planning permission from the Greater London Authority following previous Ealing Council approval in September 2022 to develop a 462-home co-living scheme to be called The Castle on the site.

The scheme will see two towers being built with one building 32 storeys and the other 27 storeys high.

The pub, previously owned by Fuller’s, closed in 2020 and Tide said its plans also include a new pub and additional leisure facilities on the land.

The new pub will also be a focal point of the development. Tide said it will feature “a sculptural elevation that pays homage to the historic architecture of everyday London pubs”.

Included within the pub will be space for local community use.

The Castle has been designed in collaboration with architects HTA Design. Tide said it will feature a wide variety of onsite amenities for those living there.

Spread across four floors will be 16,000 sq ft of communal space offering lounge areas, private dining and co-working spaces, a library, gym, cinema and games rooms.

According to Tide, it will take around 18 months to complete the constriction of the development and homes.

Helen McManus, planning manager for Tide Construction commented: “The Castle will not only bring much needed revitalisation and quality new homes to this part of Ealing, but it will do so while cutting construction time by approximately 50% compared to traditional methods of construction, enabling the project to be delivered swiftly and with minimal disruption to the local community.”

Christy Hayes, chief executive of Tide Construction said: “The Castle’s 462 homes further strengthen Tide’s pipeline of homes and our sustained year-on-year growth. The Castle is another step forward for Tide in demonstrating how volumetric construction can deliver the housing London needs in a safe, sustainable, and efficient way.”

Simon Toplis, Partner at HTA Design, said: “The Castle is our tenth project with Tide Construction, and will build on our joint track record of delivering high quality homes that demonstrate the incredible potential of volumetric modular. The design flexibility afforded by Vision’s volumetric system enables us to create bespoke and highly crafted schemes that respond to the neighbourhood context and character, time and time again. The Castle is particularly exciting in this respect, combining the delivery of innovative co-living with the rare opportunity to reimagine a classic London pub for the 21st Century.”

Other co-living projects from Tide include Enclave: Croydon, which offers 817 homes and its first residents are set to move in at the end of this year.
