Less than 1% of council tax owed by residents in Ealing over the last decade has had to be written off by Ealing Council, new findings have revealed.
In total since 2014, the council has had to write off £9.45m due to residents not paying. This compares to £29m for Birmingham City Council, £87m for Manchester City Council and £84m for City of Edinburgh Council over the last five years according to a freedom of information request by Accident Claims Advice (ACA) and reported by LocalGov.
Speaking to EALING.NEWS, an Ealing Council spokesperson said: “The figures published by LocalGov reflect in-year collections of council tax only. In reality, the recovery process sometimes carries on for several years afterwards, and all debts are fully pursued. The final collection rate is usually around 99%, with write offs accounting for well under 1% of council tax (0.67%).”
