Ealing gets ready to take part in September’s World Car Free Day

Ealing Council is inviting residents across the borough to take part in World Car Free Day in September and apply to have their road closed so it be used for play during the day.

The official day takes place on 22 September 2023 but residents can apply to get their road closed on 22, 23 or 24 September 2023.

Ealing Council says it is waiving its usual road closure fees and is making the application to apply “as quick and easy as possible”.

Any street can be considered as long as it isn’t a main road, bus route or emergency vehicle route. The council also added that roads that are part of the Ealing Half Marathon route will not be eligible for Car Free Day closure on 24 September 2023.

Residents have until 8 September 2023 to apply on the council website and the first 30 applicants will also receive a play kit complete with toys and games.

Councillor Peter Mason, leader of Ealing Council said: “Car Free Day is a lot of fun. It also brings neighbours out of their homes and allows everyone to enjoy their street in a safe way.”

Councillor Deirdre Costigan, deputy leader and cabinet member for climate action said: “Car Free Day is all about the council working with residents to make our streets safer and healthier for children and families.”

She added: “It also encourages us all to think again about using the car if we don’t need to, so that we can help reduce air pollution and fight the climate emergency. I do hope as many Ealing families as possible will take part in what looks like it will be a fantastic, fun weekend.”
