Ealing Liberal Democrats has selected Tariq Mahmood, a consultant gastroenterologist working in the NHS to stand for the party in the Ealing Southall constituency when the next national election is called.
While no formal date has yet to be declared, the current Government will have to ensure it is called to take place no later than 2024.
The current MP Virendra Sharma, 75, has served the constituency since 2007 but has yet to announce if he will be standing again.
Mr Mahmood has worked in the NHS for more than 25 years and says he has spent most of his life in Southall.
He said: “I have stood for election in parliamentary seats three times; the last being in Ealing Southall in 2019 where I more than doubled the vote share so I am very familiar with the local issues. I am a consultant gastroenterologist and have worked in the NHS for more than 25 years. I have spent most of my life, especially socially, in Southall.”
Mr Mahmood added: “I have wide experience from NHS dealing with problems of people, management, teamwork and leadership skills which are all transferable to be a good MP. I am incredibly proud to have been selected to be the Liberal Democrat candidate when the next General Election takes place.”
When he stood in 2019, Mr Mahmood said: “I am against Brexit and will fight to save services in Ealing Hospital. I will strive to reduce knife crime and improve opportunities for youth in Southall.”
In the results, he came third with 3,993 votes and increased the Liberal Democrats percentage share.
