Ealing LibDems challenge Ealing Council’s decision to close Perivale Park Golf Course

Ealing Liberal Democrats have called for a review into Labour-run Ealing Council’s decision to close Perivale Park Golf Course and its golf club with a meeting on Thursday (28 March 2024) of the council’s overview and scrutiny committee.

Earlier this month, Peter George, Ealing Council’s strategic director for economy and sustainability took the decision to permanently close the golf course. This is the start of the process for works to transform the course into a accessible park which the council says could then become part of a new much larger regional park.

The LibDems says the areas next to the course offers many paths for walking and cycling which can be expanded and hundreds of trees can be planted in and around the area to meet the council’s plans to expand tree growing in the borough.

As a flat golf course, it is also accessible and while nearby Brent Valley golf course, which has 18 holes, is part of plans of a new regional park, it isn’t as accessible. A letter from Age UK to Ealing Council also highlighted the flatness of the course and its accessibility.

Liberal Democrat Councillor Connie Hersch, opposition spokesperson on communities, crime and anti-social behaviour said: “Liberal Democrats are listening to residents who are telling the council that the golf course should survive within the park. There is no need to close the golf course.”

Councillor Hersch added: “Labour-run Ealing Council is not being open and transparent about what happens if the costs of the new regional park are more than expected. Liberal Democrats are standing up for residents who want to see their community facilities improved.”
