Hundreds of people gathered outside Ealing Town Hall on Saturday (6 January 2024) as well as in Ealing Broadway shopping centre to call for a Gaza ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war. They also challenged Ealing Southall MP Virendra Sharma and Ealing North MP James Murray over their abstaining in November on a ceasefire vote in Parliament.
Organised by Ealing Friends of Palestine, the demonstrators also protested outside Ealing Broadway station and marched down Uxbridge Road.
In a listing for the event on Visit Southall, it was described as: “Stand in solidarity on the 6th of January 2024, outside Ealing Town Hall, raising your voices for our brothers and sisters in Palestine. Hold 2 of our 3 local politicians accountable who still remain silent over the genocide.”
It added: “Virendra Sharma & James Murray haven’t used their powers to put any pressure on the government for a ceasefire, along with many of our councillors who stay silent.”
Ealing Central & Acton MP, Dr Rupa Huq has previously called for a ceasefire and recently said: “The Hamas massacres in Israel and subsequent war in Gaza have been horrifying for all of us as they unfold in real time across our 24 hour news media. As the death toll has wracked up, the present situation of suffering has become unsustainable. Recently when it was put to the vote, I backed a ceasefire on all sides to get the hostages out.”
