A group of volunteers across Ealing who have been looking after local nature and wildlife have been recognised for their work by getting The King’s Award for Voluntary Service.
The prestigious award is being given to Ealing Wildlife Group which over recent years has run a number of conservation projects across the borough featuring a wide variety of species including peregrine falcons, swifts, harvest mice, barn owls, bats and recently reintroducing beavers to Ealing at Paradise Fields in Greenford.
The group meets on a regular basis and hosts a number of activities across the borough including educational talks and walks.
Ealing Wildlife Group is one of 262 local groups being recognised in this year’s awards which was announced on The King’s birthday (14 November 2023).
Members of Ealing Wildlife Group will receive their award from Sir Kenneth Olisa OBE, Lord-Lieutenant of Greater London later this summer and two volunteers from Ealing Wildlife Group will attend a special garden party for all award recipients at Buckingham Palace in May or June 2024.
Founder and chair of Ealing Wildlife Group, Dr Sean McCormack said: “It’s such an exciting announcement to hear that Ealing Wildlife Group have received such a prestigious award, a testament to the incredible community of hardworking volunteers we have gathered over the past seven years. Come rain or shine, at short notice or for back-breaking work, our volunteers come along and get stuck into activities with enthusiasm, smiles, laughs, friendship and camaraderie, all for their love of nature and wildlife. It’s a fantastic community of people and makes me so proud to be part of it. It’s just wonderful to get some recognition for all their hard work, from the core team to our regular project volunteers.”
Dr McCormack added: “Whether you’ve decided to come along and help us plant a tree, release a tiny threatened harvest mouse back to the wild or just take care and pride in the green spaces we are lucky to have on our doorstep here in urban Ealing, this award is for you! Massive thanks t everyone who volunteers with Ealing Wildlife Group and makes it the brilliant, positive and productive community it is today.”
