Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters from Acton, Chiswick, Ealing and Park Royal fire stations attended to a blaze at a block of flats on Hanbury Road in Acton in the early hours of today (17 August 2023).
The London Fire Brigade was called at 3:14am and the incident was over at 4:22pm.
According to the Brigade, the fire is believed to have been accidental and caused by unsafe throwing away of smoking materials.
A small part of a bedroom and balcony in a third floor flat was destroyed by fire. Four women left the flat before the Brigade arrived and were treated on scene for smoke inhalation by the London Ambulance Service.
A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: “If you’re a smoker, it’s absolutely vital you ensure your cigarette is completely out when you’ve finished smoking it. If you don’t, you risk causing a fire which could not only destroy your home, but also cost you your life.”
London Fire Brigade has also issued a reminder to smokers to follow its smoking safety top tips
- It’s safer to smoke outside, but make sure cigarettes are put right out and disposed of properly.
- Never smoke in bed, and avoid smoking on arm chairs and sofas – especially if you think you might fall asleep.
- Take extra care when you’re tired, taking prescription drugs or if you’ve been drinking alcohol.
- Use proper ashtrays, which can’t tip over and stub cigarettes out properly.
