Phillip Portwood, Mayor of Ealing from 1999 to 2000 and former councillor of East Acton ward has passed away aged 65.
Mr Portwood was an Ealing Labour Councillor from 1984 to 2006. He was a councillor for the former Victoria ward from 1984 to 2002 and then from 2002 to 2006 he represented East Acton ward.
As the Millennium mayor, Mr Portwood was assisted by his mother Joan as the Millennium Mayoress. His mother passed away in 2013 while his father passed away in 2010.
A life long resident of East Acton, Mr Portwood was a pupil at the local John Perryn Primary School from 1963 to 1969. In 1982, he was appointed a governor of the school.
Mr Portwood was also very active for Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) where he was involved in its West Middlesex branch.
In a statement sent by Ealing’s Mayor office: “Our deepest sympathy goes out to his family at this very difficult time.”
Mr Portwood was also secretary of Ealing Co-op Party. Posting on X (formerly Twitter), Councillor Miriam Rice wrote: “All of us at the Ealing Co-op Party are incredibly saddened by the passing of our secretary Phil Portwood. A highly respected mayor, organiser and agent, and much missed by our party across London. Phil made many of us who we are today and thoughts are with his many loved ones.”
Mr Portwood’s funeral will take place on 12 December 2023 Time: 3.20pm at Mortlake Crematorium, Townmead Road, TW9 4EN.
Those attending have been told to wear something red to the funeral which they say he would appreciate it.
The family have requested no flowers. Donations in Mr Portwood’s memory can be made directly to the Alzheimer’s Society, a charity close to his heart.
