Golfers across Ealing come out to play at Perivale despite threat from Ealing Council to close popular golf course

With the ongoing threat of closure for Perivale Park Golf Course by Labour-run Ealing Council to make way for a new regional park, golfers from across Ealing and beyond came out in force to play at the 100-year-old community course on Thursday (15 February 2024).

As well as locals, golfers from outside the borough came to play and show support for the Perivale Park Golf Club members fighting to keep their club and course open.

Speaking to EALING.NEWS, Lakhvir Rai, vice club captain said: “It was perfect weather for golf today, very mild and virtually no wind. The course is still a little soft underfoot but that won’t stop Perivale golfers enjoying themselves. As soon as the weather improves golfers head for Perivale. They know it’s a no-nonsense course where they can hone their golf skills for the forthcoming season. It’s great to see them.”

Regarding concerns over the future of the course, Mr Rai added: “We are waiting patiently for the results of the public consultation on the regional park and future of the golf course. Of all the comments we have read about the course by Ealing the ones that have really upset is that the course is under used. All sorts of figures have been produced by Ealing to try to prove this point.

“In the end we sent a freedom of Information request to Ealing and we were told 30,000 rounds of golf were played on the course during 2022. That’s 80 rounds a day. Councillor Polly Knewstub has told us that the reasons Ealing Council want to close the course are not economic. We really thank her for saying that publicly, we know she didn’t have to do that.”

“We hope Ealing will at least consider our plans for tree planting, rewilding and alternative space usage we submitted as part of our response to the public consultation. We can be an integral part of the new Ealing regional park.”

Ealing Council is set to publish the results of its public consultation by the end of this month.
