The trust that runs Ealing Hospital, Northwick Park Hospital and Central Middlesex Hospital in Park Royal, LNWH, is one of 21 hospital trusts across the UK that have been awarded funding to help double its clinical trials from 20 to 40 a year by 2029.
LNWH has been given £7m by the Commercial Research Delivery Centre (CRDC) which it says: “will forge closer links with the private sector to improve both the speed and capacity of developing and trialling new medical treatments for patients.”
The trust says the money will be used to help it focus on cardiology and diabetes, infectious disease, paediatrics, bowel cancer, ophthalmology and respiratory conditions along with national studies.
Christiana Dinah, director of research and Innovation for LNWH, said: “We’ve been involved in commercial industry trials for many years and this is very much a team effort. We’ve been able to provide early access to many life-changing therapies over the years, sometimes 2-3 years before they are available across the NHS.
Ms Dinah added: “This investment will allow us to scale up and give our community access to far more potentially groundbreaking treatments. We have a good track record with medical trials in north-west London including supporting the testing of treatments for obesity and heart health and treatments that prevent sight loss from diabetes which are now widely available.”
