Notting Hill and Ealing High School celebrates its 150th year

Notting Hill and Ealing High School (NHEHS) is celebrating 150 years since it first opened in 1873. The school for girls, which was established in Notting Hill, moved to Ealing in 1931.

Last month, headmaster Matthew Shoults visited the Houses of Parliament with a group of sixth formers studying politics where they were met by former pupil and Ealing Central & Acton MP Dr Rupa Huq. Dr Huq also petitioned the House of Commons to recognising the 150th year of the school.

Along with Dr Huq, the students also met former Ealing Councillor Joy Morrissey. Ms Morrissey is now the MP for Beaconsfield and is a NHEHS parent.

Back at the school, there has been plenty of celebrations so far this term with more to come.

Students took part in a special assembly by Mr Shoults on the school’s history and there were celebrations including a Victorian-themed lunch of lemon and parsley roast chicken and syrup sponge with custard or jam tarts, a family quiz and birthday cake.

More than 300 alumnae and former staff also came back to the school on 16 September 2023 for a bubbly afternoon tea with birthday cake. The event saw former headteachers Mrs Jane Fitz, Mrs Susan Whitfield and Ms Lucinda Hunt in attendance.

Among the highlights of the afternoon was a performance by the Madrigal Choir, conducted by Gordon Pullin, former head of music at NHEHS. Alumnae of all An auction raised money for the Alumnae 150th Anniversary Bursary Fund and prizes included tickets to Disneyland, pilates lessons and a landscape gardening consultation.

Other planned events will be the publication of a book of 150 memories of the school from alumnae and former staff, which goes on sale later this year.

January 2023 sees the official opening of the new sustainable Junior School and Sixth Form space and 2 February 2024 marks the anniversary of the move
to Ealing from the original site in Notting Hill.

More music will be happening on 11 March 2024 with a musical concert at Cadogan Hall in Chelsea, with performances from current pupils and alumnae.
A  Parents’ Guild Anniversary Ball will also be held on 23 March 2024.
