Opinion: Ealing Council “misleading” residents over closure of Perivale Park Golf Course

In a reply to Labour-run Ealing Council and senior council officials announcing that they intend to honour their 2022 manifesto of creating 10 new parks which will see the closure of the existing Perivale Park Golf Course,  David Chapman a spokesperson for Perivale Park Golf Club has responded to them.

“In 2022, when they were trying to persuade local residents to vote for them, absolutely no mention was made of closing the only accessible affordable for all local community municipal course / cafe in order to achieve the creation of 10 new parks.

“The council have been told throughout this shameful consultation process how vital this local community 9-hole flat golf course / cafe has benefited the health and well-being for many older Ealing borough residents.

“They also disregarded the online petition of over 3,500 signatories, and the paper petition signed in person at the cafe by over 2,500, which included not only golfers, but residents, walkers / dog walkers, ramblers, runners”

“Ealing Council are guilty of misleading the public. The public consultation process gave the impression that those taking part were choosing between several exciting innovations contained within a new regional park. It also gave the impression that the closure of Perivale Park was a vital first step in establishing the regional park.

“What have we got now? A park is going to be turned into a park and vague promises of something more to come in the future.

“In the meantime, a one-hundred-year-old social asset that provides companionship and exercise at a reasonable cost for working class people is going to be closed for good. Ealing will turn Perivale Park Golf Course into weed infested impenetrable midden that will become the home of anti-social behaviour and an area that decent people will avoid.”

“In June the proposed closure date, I’m sure there will some great photo opportunities for Around Ealing and Ealing’s Facebook page of crowds of people enjoying themselves walking across Perivale Park Golf course. I mean the course should be looking at its best then. Let’s face it for Councillors Costigan and Knewstub there’s no point in losing a great photo opportunity.

“An absolutely appalling decision by Ealing Council. They have betrayed every working class principal that the Labour Party stands for. Totally totally disgusting.”
