Perivale-born actress Kerry Godliman highlights modern slavery campaign

Perivale-born actress and stand-up comedian Kerry Godliman is among a number of TV and film stars fronting a new campaign to highlight modern slavery and the rise of it.

Ms Godliman has joined with fellow actors including Julie Hesmondhalgh and Andi Oliver, to be part of modern slavery charity Causeway and its Stand With Survivors campaign.

Ms Godliman is known for her roles including playing Lisa Johnson in Netflix’s After Life, Sonya Reeves in ITV’s Trigger Point, and care home manager Hannah in Channel 4’s Derek.

According to Causeway, modern slavery cases in London have been rising and in 2023, London alone accounted for 45% of all referrals for modern slavery support, through the government’s National Referral Mechanism.

Across the world there are more than 50 million people trapped in modern slavery and exploitation of which over 100,000 are in the UK.

Ms Godliman said: “I was horrified to learn just how prevalent modern slavery is, and so supporting Causeway’s Stand With Survivors campaign was a no brainer. This campaign is all about us coming together and standing alongside survivors who have been affected. These are people just like me and you, and people who deserve the same dignity, freedom and care.”

Edwin Buckley, head of communications and engagement at Causeway, said: “Modern slavery does not discriminate, anybody could find themselves affected by it, and statistics show it continues to be on the rise in the UK. Having these celebrities working with us to raise awareness and advocate against modern slavery is so impactful.”
