Her Royal Highness Queen Camilla came to Ealing on Tuesday (29 August 2023) to meet children and their grandparents from across the borough.
Her Majesty opened a new library at Fielding Primary School in West Ealing at an event organised by Poetry Together and hosted by broadcaster Gyles Brandreth which saw children recite poetry.
The event was part of the Poetry Together initiative to celebrate the start of Poetry Together 2023.
Also attending was Mayor of Ealing Hitesh Tailor along with other local dignitaries including Councillor Peter Mason, leader of the council.
During her visit, Queen Camilla also presented certificates as well as cutting a cake with special Alice and The Mad Hatter characters on stage. The special Honey and Cream sponge cake, which was baked at Buckingham Palace, was brought to the school by Her Majesty.
Fielding Primary School pupils from reception, year 2, year 3 and year 5 took part in the performance. Fielding’s year 2 and year 3 pupils and their grandparents recited Mary Howitt’s poem The Spider and The Fly for The Queen. Following this, Queen Camilla said: “Brilliant, that was absolutely incredible” when she presented certificates.
Among those who received a certificate and met The Queen was Benjamin Andrews who read his poem about a family member with cancer.
Also attending was Baroness Floella Benjamin who said on X (formerly Twitter): “Great to be at the launch of #PoetryTogether at @FieldingPrimary School and to hear some amusing poetry recitals from both children and their grandparents. Proud to be the Greater London Lieutenancy Champion to promote this important project @Poetry_Together”.
