As part of last month’s Christian Aid Week 2023, St Stephen’s Church in West Ealing has raised £3,400 to help farming communities recovering from Malawi’s Cyclone Freddy.
The Church organised a number of fundraising events including a concert by choir Coro West London.
Organiser Sue Charlton explained more about what was achieved to help those in Malawi: “Our total raised for Christian Aid Week 2023 at St Stephen’s is just over £3,400. This includes all monies raised from sponsorship of London Freedom Walkers, also at a fair and lunches, from the concert and teas and donated in delivery-only envelopes from streets close to our church.”
Joining in with the events was a representative from Christian Aid who offered insights into the situation Malawi farmers are facing.
Ms Charlton added: “The Rev Mohammad Eghtedarian from Christian Aid gave a short address at the concert to explain about Christian Aid’s projects with local organisations, including work with farmers in Malawi, suffering from the climate crisis, such as safe storage for native pigeon peas and community ovens to bake bread made from the peas.
“We all then enjoyed tea and homemade cakes in the Church Centre – guests, singers and our volunteers which was a lovely celebration to close a busy week.”

At the end of the speech, Rev Eghtedarian presented Ms Charlton with a Long Service Award, for her many years organising fundraising for Christian Aid at St Stephen’s.
