Petition to report cats hit by vehicles gets local councillor support to be heard in Parliament in new year

The leader of Ealing Liberal Democrats, Councillor Gary Malcolm has joined with over 100,000 people signing a petition to give cats the same legal requirement as other animals in the event that a vehicle hits them.

The Southfield Councillor, who is a rescue cat owner from the RSPCA, signed the petition called “Make it a legal requirement for drivers to stop & report collisions with cats” which has gained enough names for it to be debated directly in Parliament.

102,000 people have said they want to see if cats are injured on the road that these incidents are reported as a traffic incident in the same way it is done for other animals including dogs, horses, sheep, goats and pigs. Currently cats are not included in the list

Councillor Malcolm said: “It is great that the petition has reached over 100,000 names so a debate in parliament can take place, but we want to see the government arrange for the debate to happen as soon as possible. If my cat was hit by a vehicle, I would be distraught. It seems obvious that cat owners should get the same treatment as dog owners.”

The debate in Parliament is scheduled to take place on 9 January 2023.
