Getting into the swing of fundraising and helping the community

Colin Selway shares details of how Brent Valley Golf Club has been supporting the community with its various charity fundraising events.

“I was honoured to have been asked to become the club captain for Brent Valley Golf Club (BVGC) from June 2022 to May 2023.

“Brent Valley has been a constant part of my life for as far back as I can remember and not necessarily for golf. My earliest experiences were taking the direct route from the ‘golf links estate’, where I grew up to visit my nan on the cuckoo estate. I became a member of the BVGC family in 1987 and have played my golf here ever since.

“Part of the captain’s remit is to raise money for their nominated charity(ies) and for me, it was extremely important to give back to the Ealing community in as many different ways as possible and with help of fun events and donations I was able to raise £1,202.01 and have been able to make the following donations to:

The Circle Cafe – South Ealing

“Everyone’s mental health and wellbeing is extremely important. Especially for those to whom we entrust our future and quite often we forget the impact this can have on our children and young adults.

“I came across Nana Owusu and her team by chance. In January 2023, they launched the countries first hub space and cafe in South Ealing that offers support for ‘young people from the age of 5 to 18, who are at near crisis point with their mental health’.

“BVGC will explore ways to continue to support this worthy cause, including raising awareness through quiz nights.

Meadow House Hospice

“Meadow House Hospices is a non-profit organisation providing specialist palliative care to Ealing residents facing life limiting conditions. They provide respite and care for both day care and in-patients. As a keen gardener, it was important for me to ensure that everyone has a place to go to for ‘quiet time’, fresh air or just to enjoy the ‘colour’. My donation was specifically given to help maintain and support the ongoing garden maintenance.

“BVGC have also provided Meadow House with two runners for the recent September half-marathon and volunteers to help maintain the garden.

Brent Valley Junior Academy

“In 2021 one of our members Richard Gray, presented BVGC with his vision for launching a golf academy for young adults who may not normally consider golf as a ‘sport of choice’, due to the cost of equipment, lessons and green fees. Through generous funding from various sources the academy was able to provide everyone participating in the academy with a set of golf clubs to keep for the year, shoes, gloves, branded fleeces, shirts and thirty-four 2-hour coaching sessions. Everyone Active also kindly provided each participant unlimited access to the Brent Valley Golf Course.

“As the academy enters the third year, the goal is to now look at how golf can support young adults who struggle with mental health and wellbeing concerns. This gives the academy the chance to link up with the Circle Café and build a supportive relationship.

“Unfortunately, applications to both Sport England and The National Lottery were declined and the academy will continue to function through donations.

“Brent Valley Golf Course remains a public course owned by Ealing Council and managed by Everyone Active. Brent Valley Golf Club is a private members club affiliated to Brent Valley Golf Course. The club initially founded in 1909, became Brent Valley Golf Club in 1938.

“We have a long history within the Ealing community and continue to promote golf to anyone and everyone through inclusivity and diversity. In 2022 we won the prestigious ‘Middlesex Club of the Year’ award and earlier this year we made the final 4 in England Golf’s inclusivity and diversity section. This was a huge honour as we were assessed alongside both private and public golf clubs across the breadth and depth of England!

“No matter your level of play you will always be welcome.”
