Hanwell Town recorded their second win of the season on Saturday (17 August 2024), following Tuesday’s (13 August 2024) 3-1 win, with a sound and competent victory over Swindon Supermarine, thanks to Jordan Edwards’ first half strike that will very likely be a candidate for Goal of the Month within the Southern League.
The game itself was short on energy and both sides looked to be conserving energy in the sunshine, but for periods in the first half, the Geordies held the upper hand without being able to beat Supermarine keeper Luke Purnell.
In the warm August sunshine, the Geordies created the first clear chance on 15 minutes as Chris Regis fired in a powerful shot from fully 30 yards which left Purnell scurrying to get close to the attempt, it striking the outside of the post and going wide.
Not long afterwards, Regis had two further chances; the first forced the diving Purnell to paw the ball away, before a defender’s block stopped another shot from the impressive midfielder preventing him from opening the Geordies scoring.
From the resulting corner, Hanwell defender Dwayne Duncan connected with the cross with a header but Purnell was equal to the task, pushing it wide.
Supermarine finally showed some threat, with tricky winger Liban Ibrahim connecting with winger Olly Mehew’s cross just inside the Hanwell penalty area, but his attempt flew high over the bar.
In first half injury time the Geordies pushed forward, midfielder Callum Woodcock winning the ball, and despite pressure, he managed to make the pass to striker Alfie Pendlebury.
Pendlebury laid the ball back to the unmarked Jordan Edwards, who stroked a delightful curling shot into the top corner from the edge of the penalty area past the despairing Purnell.
Supermarine tried to come back in the second half, with striker Harry Williams finding space at the edge of the Hanwell penalty area to try a shot, but it went high and wide.
Just before the hour, Pendlebury managed to break the Supermarine defensive line, and created a one-on-one with Purnell, but the keeper managed to get his body in the way to block the shot.
The game then drifted until the final ten minutes when Supermarine substitute Gabriel Reivers forced a save from debutant keeper Dion-Curtis Henry, but the Geordies had the last word as midfielder Mat MacKenzie managed to hit a shot on goal as he lost his balance, but Purnell get a hand to the attempt and tip it round the corner.
Speaking after the match, Hanwell manager Chris Moore expressed his satisfaction with the performance.
“A gritty team performance, but we ground out the 1-0 win and it’s been good to get six points this week. We conceded a lot of points after taking the lead last season, so to not look like conceding was fantastic today.
“To be honest, I thought Jordan Edwards should have scored earlier, and told him so. But he shot from the edge of the area into the top corner, and he meant it. He’s got that little bit of quality that we’ve been lacking in the past and he’s come up with the goods today with a quality finish.”
The Geordies now look forward to the Bank Holiday weekend, with games on Saturday and Monday.
Saturday sees them make a long journey west, travelling to South Wales to face Merthyr Town at Penydarren Park, before returning to the Powerday Stadium to face Marlow on the Monday, kicking off at 3pm.
