Acton-based Descendants, a charity for young people which explores African and Caribbean culture has a number of after school projects running with places still available as well as a creative arts competition to enter.
The Grip
This 6-week project with artist, Candice Rodney-Sobers, is intended to commemorate the 75th anniversary of Windrush. Each session will use creative techniques to explore the transition from the Caribbean to the UK and its impact generationally. Work and interpretations created by your children and young people will contribute towards a large textile piece that will later be exhibited in Black History Month event on 28 October 2023, further details will follow.
The sessions will exercise a number of educational skills such as reading, writing, mathematics, textiles, art and design.
Dates: Wednesday 13 September 2023 – Wednesday 18 October 2023 (Wednesdays only)

Descendants Excel Club
Descendants Excel Club will reconvene as usual after The GRIP project as concluded, where Wednesdays evening sessions from 4.30pm-6.30, children (4-14 years old) will have the chance to have 1:1 reading sessions, play games, practise numbers and more. Registration can be done via our website or in-person upon arrival.
Wonderful Me
Each term, Descendants online Friday club focuses on the influential impacts of African and Caribbean culture. Previous topics have included, Windrush, Black Royalty: Coronations, Ceremonies and Celebrations, Black Inventors and more. We aim for every attendee to come away with a heightened realisation that they can make a difference in the world around them, no matter how big or small. This term, Descendants Friday Club will be focusing on what makes you you and the importance of our uniqueness.
Dates: Every Friday during term time
Time: (Primary: 4 years old +) 17.30pm-18.30pm, (Secondary: 11 years old +) 18.30pm-19.30pm
Attendance: Online (Zoom link is sent out via WhatsApp weekly following registration)

Windrush Voices Competition
In preparation for Descendants joint event with Action for Race Equality, young people between the ages of 10-18 years old are invited to enter our Windrush Voices Competition. We want to hear your reflections on the legacy of the Windrush generation. Get creative, get writing, get filming…however you choose to express your perspective. Submissions should be submitted via

Winners of the Windrush Voices Competition will be announced at Descendants and Action for Race Equalities joint event at Acton Gardens Community Centre on 28 October 2023. Submissions will be showcased as part of the exhibition on the day, in addition to a panel discussion and performances reflecting on the 75th anniversary of Windrush.
