Hanwell’s beloved Carnival is fast approaching after a two year pause due to Covid-19 and it’s set to bounce back bigger and better than ever when the streets of Hanwell come to life on Saturday June 18 2022.
The Hanwell Carnival was established in 1898 and is thought to be the oldest in London. It was founded to raise much needed funds for the Cottage Hospital, now Ealing Hospital and since then has grown, raised more funds for various good causes and has helped to unite the community both in Hanwell and across Ealing.
The colourful event starts from Hanwell Community Centre in Cuckoo Avenue at 11am and will reach Elthorne Park where the official opening of the carnival will be made by the new mayor of Ealing, Councillor Mohinder Midha.
Music, arts & crafts, face painting, charity fundraising, sports and much more will be on offer during the event which following the street procession culminates at Elthorne Park.
“On the music stage we have assembled a great line-up featuring several local bands. The Volted Hearts offer a mix of 60s garage pop, 70s new wave, Motown, Stax and soul, while the Hornets focus on 60s R&B with a mixture of covers and originals. Branwell Black brings electropop and glamour. We have the irrepressible Hanwell Ukulele Band on stage as well as many others,” said Ralph Brookfield, member of the carnival committee.
More than 30 local charities will also be attending. “A big part of Carnival is the charity stalls and this year we have over 30 local charities present.,” said Allison Coles, another committee member. “For many of them this is the biggest fundraising event of the year, so we encourage all visitors to support their causes.”
Hanwell’s much loved football team Hanwell FC will also be there.
“In the sports zone we are delighted to welcome Hanwell Town FC to the carnival,” said committee member Helen Papadopoulos. “The London Geordies had a fantastic season in 2021/22, culminating in promotion to Step 3 of non-league football for the first time in their history. Together with Ealing Eagles Ball Hockey Club they will be giving people a chance of a spot of physical exercise and fun if they wish.”
Local crafts will be available to buy on the day.
“In the Craft Tent there is a heady mixture of products all made by local crafters – ceramics, woodcraft, skincare, prints, silk scarves etc etc. All items are sensibly priced so you may find some unexpected bargains in there,” Allison Coles added.
And for those who love pooches, the much awaited dog show will be taking place. Allison said of the highlights of the day. “The dog show is one of the most popular attractions. This year the classes include scruffiest dog and Hanwell dogs have talent. Owners can enrol their dogs for the various classes on the day. Close by is the Animal Zone offering donkey rides and a petting farm featuring Shetland ponies, sheep, goats and rabbits.”
